Java file outside of source root intelliJ

I have cloned a spring boot project from GitLab having multiple branches in IntelliJ. I checkout to the branch in which I want to work. But I am getting «Java file outside of source root» on all the files. Please suggest what I am doing wrong. I just installed IntelliJ and it’s the first project that I am importing.

If you do an ‘import from git’, IntelliJ doesn’t import the project structure from maven (or gradle) automatically.

One way to do this afterwards is to right-click on the pom.xml file in the root directory, and select ‘Add as maven project’. Then the folders will be marked correctly, and dependent libraries will be imported. There should be no need to mark individual source folders manually.

I prefer to do a git clone outside of IntelliJ, and open the project from the local filesystem, then IntelliJ imports the maven project structure automatically.

Auto errors detection in IntelliJ IDEA

I am new to Java programming language and the IntelliJ IDEA 2017.1 IDE.

I just installed the IDE and I activated all the various inspections but the IDE is unable to detect the errors any time I make a mistake such as omitting a bracket or a semicolon.

This image displays the activated inspections:

This is a screenshot of my code with multiple errors but no detected by the IDE: java file outside of source root intellij idea что делать

Kindly help me solve this problem.

Java file is not analyzed since it’s located outside of the source root. You need to either relocate the file or reconfigure your content roots so that it resides under the folder configured as the Sources root.

Sources root is marked in blue in the project view. Here is the example of the properly configured project (notice the class icon is different than on your screenshot):

java file outside of source root intellij idea что делать

One more reason could be IntelliJ is running on power saver mode, this could be disabled following way:

java file outside of source root intellij idea что делать

This is finally what worked for me! Phew! My Problem: Whenever I exit Intellij and try to open up an old/existing project, I have trouble getting the builds and execute to work on my localhost. I’m just using localhost.

Here are the steps that finally worked on my localhost environment:

1. Go to Project Structure and Select Project

a. Set the SDK to 10 (“Java Version 10.0.2”) or whatever you are using.

c. Project Language Level: I chose “SDK Default”

2. Go to Project Structure and Select Modules

a. Click on src (this is where my source code sits).

b. Then, Click on the “Sources” folder icon on the top. This adds src to the “Source folders” on the right. You will see the color change to Blue

3. Then, click on “Add Configuration” (top right corner of Intellij)

a. Select + at the top left hand corner.

b. Select “Application”

c. Change the name to “Main”

d. Now click on the Ellipsis (three dots) in “Main Class”. You should now see your Main Class. Select it.

e. You should now see the execute arrow at that top right of Intellij. And you should see the build icon (Hammer).

1. Invalidate caches and restart IntelliJ

2. Deactivate the Power Saver Mode

If you use a build system (Maven, Gradle, etc.):

Open its panel in IntelliJ, then click the reimport button. For Gradle, this button looks like a sync icon and its hovertext says «Reload All Gradle Projects».

Why it works:

Since the build system is in charge of compiling your code, it knows which files are source code. It would be a waste of computing power to look for missing semicolons in a compiled binary file, so IntelliJ won’t try to find errors until it knows the file is source code.

Most build systems, Maven and Gradle included, are also dependency managers. When you write code that uses libraries or depends on a different module, IntelliJ needs to be able to understand the dependency to tell you whether your code makes sense, or whether you made a mistake like forgetting an import statement or passing the wrong type of argument into a library function. When IntelliJ doesn’t understand your dependencies, it displays all your uses of imported code in red text.

Content roots

Modules normally have one content root. You can add more content roots. For example, this might be useful if pieces of your code are stored in different locations on your computer.

At the same time, modules can exist without content roots. In this case, you can use them as a collection of dependencies for other modules.

Add a new content root

Select the necessary module and then open the Sources tab in the right-hand part of the dialog.

Click Add Content Root and specify the folder that you want to add as a new content root.

Configure folder structure

Folder categories

Folders within a content root can be assigned to several categories.

This folder contains production code that should be compiled.

The IDE considers that files in the Generated Sources folder are generated automatically rather than written manually, and can be regenerated.

These folders keep code related to testing separately from production code. Compilation results for sources and test sources are normally placed into different folders.

The IDE considers that files in this folder are generated automatically rather than written manually, and can be regenerated.

(Java only) Resource files used in your application: images, configuration XML and properties files, and so on. During the build process, resource files are copied to the output folder as is by default. You can Change the output path for resource files in your project.

Similarly to sources, you can specify that your resources are generated. You can also specify which folder within the output folder your resources should be copied to.

These folders are for resource files associated with your test sources.

Files in excluded folders are ignored by code completion, navigation and inspection. That is why, when you exclude a folder that you don’t need at the moment, you can increase the IDE performance. Normally, compilation output folders are marked as excluded.

Apart from excluding the entire folders, you can also exclude specific files.

Marking folders as excluded doesn’t affect deployment. For information on how to exclude files from deployment, refer to Exclude files and folders from uploading and downloading.

Configure folder categories

Right-click a folder in the Project tool window.

Select Mark Directory as from the context menu.

Select the necessary category.

This way, you can assign categories to sub-folders as well.

Exclude files and folders

Exclude files

Java files and binaries cannot be excluded.

If you don’t need specific files, but you don’t want to completely remove them, you can temporarily exclude these files from the project. Excluded files are ignored by code completion, navigation, and inspections.

To exclude a file, you need to mark it as a plain text file. You can always return excluded files to their original state.

Right-click the necessary file in the Project tool window.

To revert the changes, right-click the file and select Mark as from the menu.

Exclude files and folders by name patterns

In some cases, excluding files or folders one by one is not convenient. For example, this may be inconvenient if your source code files and files that are generated automatically (by a compiler, for instance) are placed in the same directories, and you want to exclude the generated files only. In this case, you can configure one or several name patterns for a specific content root.

If a folder or a filename located inside the selected content root matches one of the patterns, it will be marked as excluded. Objects outside the selected content root won’t be affected.

All files within excluded folders will be excluded as well.

Click Modules under the Project Settings section, and then select a module.

If there are several content roots in this module, select the one that you want to exclude files or folders from.

In the Exclude files field located at the bottom of the dialog, enter a pattern. For example, enter *.aj to exclude AspectJ files.

You can configure multiple patterns and separate them with the ; (semicolon) symbol.

Marking folders as excluded doesn’t affect deployment. For information on how to exclude files from deployment, refer to Exclude files and folders from uploading and downloading.

Assign a package prefix to Java sources

In Java, you can assign a package prefix to a folder instead of configuring a folder structure manually. A package prefix can be assigned to source folders, generated source folders, test source folders and generated test source folders.

Select the necessary module and open the Sources tab.

java file outside of source root intellij idea что делать

Change the output path for resources

When you’re building a project, the resources are copied into the compilation output folder by default. You can specify a different directory within the output folder to place resources.

This information is valid for projects that are built with the native IntelliJ IDEA builder. If you’re using a build tool, such as Maven or Gradle, make all changes using the build file.

Select the necessary module and open the Sources tab.
