Question: Q: What is com.apple.IconServicesAgent?
Hi, after installing Mavericks there’s a new process ‘com.apple.IconServicesAgent’ in Activity Monitor using 165Mb of RAM.
Anyone has any idea what it is?

It is using 285MB on my machine. the second largest memory-hogging proces after kernel_task (freshly booted).

I have the same problem.
Mine is using 99% Cpu and around 200 MB Ram!

Same here. Mid 2010 MBP with 4GB RAM.
Mine hovers around 130-200MB. I wonder what it is & why it is consuming so much RAM?

Mine is using 374 MB of RAM.

Same. I actually have two copies running, one at about 300 MB, the other at 200. Kernel_task is around a gig.
Now I’d seen a post elsewhere ( http://67.227.255.239/forum/showthread.php?p=87072616 ) suggesting that they’ll get smaller when ‘memory compression’ is fully active … but I don’t know what that means, and it’s been since, what, yesterday…

Mine is back to normal. After couple of restarts and two days gone after installing Mavericks, everything is back to normal.

I’ve got the same problem, when I enter some folders I don’t have any icons, I can’t see my files and the process is running wild.

Found this thread through a Google search, as my com.apple.iconservicesagent was also going nuts in the same way as described. I don’t know exactly why it was doing so, but I did have an interesting observation.
Still not sure why it happened, but there appears to be a direct connection between the two events.

I discovered it’s some app start on login related.
probably all of us had upgraded OS X Maverick, not a clean installed one.
Can you confirm us?
The IconServicesAgent is now using only 21.4MB of memory after I disabled some apps from «Login Itens»
I opened both apps now and the resources is the same 21.4MB, without changes.
Yes, it works for me.
Go to Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Itens
Note and disable some apps: select with cursor and click on «-«
Reboot and look at Activity Monitor if the procedure was successful.
Open the app you disabled from startup and look if it changes the memory/cpu usage.

Aside from the one time I reported earlier, I haven’t seen this problem since. In case at least, I’m pretty sure it was connected to my drag-and-drop alias creation.

This is not Windows. We do not format and reinstall when we upgrade, or when a program seems to be having trouble running all of a sudden.
This is peculiar behavior. How peculiar? My X.9 install was atop my X.8, which was migrated from a Mini running X.7, which had X.6 upgraded from it, which was X.5 before that on an even older Mini, migrated from an iBook G3 that had X.4 all the way down to X.2. (Seriously. I have passwords in my keychain to Web sites I haven’t visited in more than half a decade.)
This is a very, very old legacy-install machine that’s been effectively running the same OS, more or less contiguously, since 2004 or so, with very solid reliability — even when the processor architecture was Motorola based, not Intel — and I’ve never had a serious problem with migration or updates, certainly not so serious that I’ve ever had to format and reinstall. I have never had to format and reinstall, in nearly ten years.
(This is why I like both Mac and UNIX, which are basically the same at their core; they are rock solid, better than 90% of the time, in my experience.)
No. X.9 has a problem that’s been introduced with com.apple.IconServicesAgent. It should not be occupying a quarter gig of RAM, and should not be spawned in more than one process under any circumstance — it’s apparently a core system process, not a user-executed series of instances.
If I had to guess — actually, I do have to guess — I’d suppose the process is involved entirely in loading icon previews and drawing them to screen. I’ve a feeling, if that’s the case, that it’s trying to cache all icon data from all apps and files everywhere on the hard drive at once, on the off chance that any one random icon might have to render to screen. But of course it doesn’t have to do that, since the odds that you’ll want all icons showing at once are zero. (There are typically a quarter of a million files on a clean OSX install with your basic suite of Apple apps on top of that; that is a lot of files with a lot of icons.)
My surmise is that someone overlooked that one thing; someone failed to notice that it’s trying to keep a live cache of all icons simultaneously. I think we’ll be seeing a change in its behavior with X.9.0.1 or thereabouts.
Anyway. If anyone from Apple (or any third-party company, such as @dobe) suggests — in any troubleshooting context — that you should make a new user account, or format and reinstall, feel free to laugh at them and tell them to turn to Page Two of their ‘user problem tech support script’ book. This is the 21st century. We do not format and reinstall. We deal with the problem by finding it and killing it, always nondestructively to user data.

Question: Q: iconservicesagent OS Mojave issue
Did a CLEAN install on all 3 machines of MacOS Mojave.
Both my Mac Pro & Mac Mini are hanging all the time (Beachball cursor)
When checking the Activity Monitor, the process name «iconservicesagent» is hogging up all the RAM, i kill the process, but it still comes up and eats up all the RAM and machine is rendered useless!
I read all the threads that I can find, dating back to 2014. A lot of people are having the same issue. I don’t know if people are having the same issue for MacOS Mojave? I just want to KILL this process forever! Not for a short while.

I appreciate what you’ve provided helps restore the computer to functionality, however to be clear to Apple more than you, this is NOT a solution.
Not because it didn’t work. I won’t try it. I took my iMac to an Apple Store Genius Bar, and a wonderful employee fixed my problem, and restored it to High Sierra. Guess what? No problems at all with icons. His advice was to never upgrade the OS unless you know why you are.

What this script is doing is just looping through all files in my «Movies» folder and removing the icon (what MacOS calls «ResourceFork») for each file. Hope this helps!

I’ve got the same problem, 100% agree with you, but unfortunately this process is necessary in order to see the icons properly so our hands and feet are tied.
In my case iconservicesagent process begin to devour GBs of RAM and normally Finder collapses. No matter if I try to access internal or external hard drives, the problem remains the same.
I tried two «solutions» which didn’t work for me:
a) Deleting: /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store (you´ll be prompted for your administrator login password). More info.
I hope that Apple will provide a real Mojave solution soon because right now my computer looks like an expensive paperweight and I am not psychologically prepared to go back to the Microsoft Windows World 🙁
Same Issue here. Both Macs (MacBook Pro and Mac mini) both with the same issue after installing Mojave. Never had this issue before and haven’t installed anything new, on either machine, since Mojave.
The Mac mini is far worse than the MacBook Pro. 99% system resources and iconservicesagent will get to somewhere north of 80GB of memory usage before it seems to fall over and the process starts again. Memory Pressure will stay in the red. Machine is essentially unusable.
The 2017 MacBook Pro will cap at about 60% system resources and iconservicesagent will slowly inch up to 5 GB, or so. Doesn’t seem to fall over but makes it impossible to do any work in anything that takes intensive resources (had two powerpoint files open on Friday and it was very slow). Finder is crazy sluggish as well.
I’ve been a Mac user for about 10 years now and this is the first issue like this I’ve had. Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

Same issue here. I have a lot of custom icons on my files. Iconservices tries to load those. The very same problem existed with High Sierra and was fixed around 6 Months after the release. I really didn’t think they would make the same mistake again.

After struggling with this issue for several days and on the phone with several Apple technicians, I finally figured out the source of the problem. The process iconservicesagent loads up all the icons for folders (such as the apps folder and the home folder). The user folders do not have any icons but the O/S allows users to customize these, which is what I had done for some of my folders. Apparently, for some users after upgrading the O/S (and this is not just a Mojave problem but goes back almost a decade), the process iconservicesagent fails to find and/or load the custom icons and keep replicating itself, thereby entering an infinite loop, eventually hogging both the CPU as well as the RAM, which is what freezes and crashes the O/S.
To fix the issue, I deleted as many of the custom icons I could find on my computer and the problem seems to have finally gotten resolved. I’ve learned my lesson, and will never use custom icons again.
Hope this fix helps at least some of you.

You are absolutely correct, I spent a ton of time adding custom icons to my movie files (which is a very basic and core function to any OS) and am not at all happy about having to delete them. This is a pretty massive bug for such a mature company and OS and is unacceptable to linger even this long. I’m just hoping this gets someone out of the same jam I found myself in thanks to Apple. Get it together, guys.

I had the same issue. All began with me installing Mojave. First I tried buying more memory. But iconsevicesagent just consumed the extra memory plus tons of virtual memory. On my 32 GB RAM iMac, it takes up 110 GB of RAM at times! But it only seems to happen after I point the Finder window to my external hard drive. I read other posts that also said the problem an external hard drive.
Next I tried changing the few custom icons I had within that external hard drive back to default. Didn’t help. Then I removed all the custom icons from my iMac internal hard drive. No help.
If I plug my external hard drive into my MacBook Pro, it works fine. I have not upgraded its OS yet and is still running High Sierra. If I use its Finder to access the files on the external hard drive, iconservicesagent behaves normally.
Wish I could uninstall Mojave, but I do not have a HS backup, and I hear that it’s now risky to try to go back. So I’m stuck not being able to use my external hard drive much on my main computer until hopefully Apple releases some new OS fix.
