Названия дней недели – одна из базовых тем при изучении английского языка. На первый взгляд они не сложные, но на практике часто вызывают трудности не только у начинающих. Названия английских дней недели не похожи на русские и образовались по другим принципам, которые мало кто знает. Мы не можем подобрать для них удобную систему запоминания, например, как в русском – вторник второй, среда средняя, четверг четвертый. Кроме того, у некоторых названий написание не совпадает с произношением и поэтому тоже вызывает сложности. Чтобы раз и навсегда запомнить английские дни недели, нужно узнать о них как можно больше – как и когда они появились, от каких слов произошли.
История названий дней недели в английском языке
История недели берет начало в Римской империи. В 1 веке нашей эры Юлий Цезарь заменил принятый до этого восьмидневный базарный цикл на семидневную неделю. Во 2 веке греческий астроном и астролог Веттий Валент разработал систему наименования дней недели по названию небесных тел. Такие названия закрепились в греческом и латинском языке и перешли во многие другие европейские языки.
Согласно Веттию Валенту, существует семь основных небесных тел – Солнце, Луна и пять планет. Именно их можно было с древности наблюдать невооруженным глазом и отличать от звезд. Валент заявил, что эти тела в течение суток в определенной последовательности главенствуют в небе ровно по одному часу, сменяя друг друга. Так как в сутках 24 часа, то каждый следующий день начинается с управления определенным небесным телом. Они сменяют друг друга в таком порядке: Солнце, Луна, Марс, Меркурий, Юпитер, Венера, Сатурн.
Таким образом, Веттий Валент предложил использовать для названий дней недели названия этих тел – так в греческом языке появились день Солнца, день Луны, день Сатурна и так далее. Только все эти небесные тела были известны под именами древнегреческих богов: Гелиос (Солнце), Зевс (Юпитер), Афродита (Венера), Арес (Марс). Из греческого эти названия перешли в латинский, подвергшись некоторым изменениям в соответствии с римскими именами богов.
В начале нашей эры Британия несколько веков была частью Римской империи. Но неделя и названия дней недели появились на Британских островах не напрямую через римлян. Сначала система наименования дней недели была позаимствована у римлян германцами. Они адаптировали ее под своих божеств, которые имели явные соответствия с греческими и римскими богами. Так в германских названиях дней недели появились скандинавские имена Тора, Тюра, Одина, Фрейи. В 5 веке нашей эры англосаксы, представители германских племен, завоевали Британию и принесли с собой эти названия.

Hump day rose to particular prominence in September, 2013 thanks to a popular commercial by the insurance company GEICO. In the commercial, a talking camel named Caleb walks through generic office cubicles asking his coworkers if they know what day it is. They roll their eyes, giving the impression that the camel does this every week. One of the office workers reluctantly answers him, to his delight: “It’s hump day.” Two men with guitars then explain that people who switch to GEICO insurance are “happier than a camel on Wednesday.” This commercial was the seventh most viewed on YouTube in 2013. The gag, of course, relies on a pun on the word hump, which Wednesdays metaphorically share with camel physiology.
Since the commercial’s widespread success, wishes of happy hump day have become especially associated with GEICO’s viral commercial.

In general usage, professionals and students wish each other happy hump day as congratulations for making it through the beginning of the week and as encouragement to make it through the second half. The phrase is also often used in the media to headline content published on Wednesday.
In reference to the popular Geico commercial, hump day is often paired with images or GIFs of Caleb the camel. Brands and sports teams with the camel as their mascot have also made use of the association in their marketing efforts. Camels have been brought to schools and public events for no other purpose than to celebrate Wednesday—to make it a happy hump day.
Be aware that happy hump day is frequently used on Wednesday in pornographic social-media posts, with accompanying images, to pun on the sexual slang of hump for “having sex” or “a woman’s butt.”
