This «hidden» executable keeps making uninvited appearances in my task bar. It has no name, lasts around a second and returns once every
15 minutes. After countless attemps, I was finally able to «catch» it and maximize— thus finding out its name: MS_WebcheckMonitor
I’ve done a little bit of research but no one really seems to know what this is used for. I’m pretty confident its a part of IE.. but why the heck is it popping up so much? Theres definitely something wrong.
I tried renaming Webcheck.dll in safemod but that didn’t work. I think malicious code is using the webcheck as a disguise..
Anyone got any ideas? I’ve already had my HJT log analyzed on another site and they said it was clean— however I’ll post it again anyways.

Микрософт с помощью пасьянса и косынки учила пользователей пользоваться мышью,
теперь с помощью windows 10 учит читать лицензионное соглашение.
После выхода windows 10 сразу появились сообщения о сборе информации о действиях пользователей и много обсуждений, что делать. Достаточно быстро пользователи составили список основных серверов, собирающих информацию и попытались их заблокировать через файл hosts. Но скептики сразу выдвинули здравое предположение, что MS мог предусмотреть этот метод и некоторые адреса прописать в коде. Тем более, что MS всегда может актуализировать адреса серверов через windows update.
В нашей компании начали появляться первые пользователи windows 10, и мы решили опробовать блокировку передачи телеметрии через встроенный windows firewall.
Итак, собран простой тестовый стенд:
Два ноутбука, на один из них ставим Windows 10 и подключим его к интернету через второй ноутбук, используя internet sharing. На втором ноутбуке, который работает как NAT роутер, поставим Wireshark и определим исходящий трафик на сервера MS с первого ноутбука.
Правила для Firewall
После того как мы получили список IP и убедились в эффективности их блокировки, можно, с помощью Powershell скрипта, внести их в настройки.
Для добавления правила в Firewall необходимо выполнить следующую команду (в качестве примера возьмем сервер «watson.telemetry.microsoft.com»):

name – имя правила и по совместимости название сервера Microsoft;
dir = out – параметр указывающий, что правило соответствует только исходящему сетевому трафику;
action=block – сетевые пакеты, указанные в этом правиле, будут отбрасываются firewall;
remoteip – IP-адрес получателя области исходящего сетевого пакета;
enable=yes – указывает на то, что правило в настоящее время включено.
Аналогично этому будут прописаны и другие правила. В итоге, скрипт будет иметь примерно следующий вид:

Где ms_new.ps1 – имя созданного файла с power shell командами.
После этого, добавленные правила будут отображаться в Windows Firewall, как на скриншоте ниже:
И, дополнительно, информация, не относящиеся к firewall, но относящаяся к сбору телеметрии

Также стоит отметить, что пользователи ОС Windows 7/8/8.1 получили обновления, которые расширяют возможности системы по сбору и отправке телеметрических данных. Соответственно, к этим пользователям также можно применить рекомендации, представленные в этой статье, или удалить обновления habrahabr.ru/post/265283.

Надо отключить «DiagTrack» (сбор данных в компонентах Windows) и «dmwappushservice» (cлужба маршрутизации push-сообщений WAP). Для этого запускаем командную строку от имени администратора и отключаем службы:Или же вообще их удаляем:

Все вышесказанное не 100% панацея, но одно из компромиссных решений.

I have XP SP2 and somehow about a month ago I started getting this blank
that flashes in my bottom tool bar on intervals of every 15 minutes. I
finally found out it is MS_WebcheckMonitor. Well it’s irritating as
hell and I kept thinking I had some kind of virus or something, but
after running all my anti-virus programs nothing ever showed up.
Anyway, is it ok to get rid of this thing? I searched the web and came
across the following solutions to get rid of it that looked to be the
easiest:
— Apparently going to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
and uncheck Enable offline items to be synchronized on a schedule

it may cause IE to get squirelly-
I tried that and it did nothing… so I turned it back on.
-Open Command prompt and paste this exactly

REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Webcheck /v
NoScheduledUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 1
I did that and I still have the problem… Maybe I did something wrong
while doing the 2nd one? I typed “Y” after the first paste and then
typed “Y” after the second paste.
Anyway, whatever I did above didn’t cure the problem. Is there
something I should do to undo those commands now?

-«ms_webcheckmonitor» has sth. to do with Internet Explorer. Check this
Microsoft article: Q176960 or Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:
176960. If you wish to get rid of this «ms_webcheckmonitor» open a
command prompt and go in your system directory: c:\windows\system32.
Then type: regsvr32 /u WEBCHECK.DLL and the registry entry is gone and
therewith the trouble. Restart to see the result. If you however need
«ms_webcheckmonitor» again just register the WEBCHECK.DLL with:
regsvr32 WEBCHECK.DLL and after a restart it’s back online. This
procedure worked fine on my system.

I’m not real sure what all the above entails and after I have already
did the second solution in the Command area is there something I should
do to undo that one before trying the third solution? If the third
solution looks like it would take care of the problem do I just open
the Command prompt and type c:\windows\system32 ( is there any Y/N to
answer?) When I then type regsvr32 /u WEBCHECK.DLL would there be a Y/N
or do I hit enter.
Just wondering also if anyone has gotten rid of this and if that caused
any problems.. Also how did this just appear one day? Is it ok to just
try and ignore it or is it filling up disk space or something?

Hello guys, the last week I’ve as well due to their somewhat long years of service.
Both CPU and MB dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier set to its defaults? Is the SSD set on a (last crash didn’t generate a log oddly enough). I’m also using a Corsair 650D chassi with Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn’t.
On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly I was just about to post it and my PC crashed. I’m also currently running on only on 4GB chip good too. I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. Here is my two logs + dxdiag any results.
