Собственное исследование, что нам могут рассказать открытые источники?

Вдохновившись статьей Group-IB о масштабной хакерской атаке на банки и предприятия от лица госучреждений решил разузнать про RTM немного больше.

Цель – не только найти причастных к данной атаке, но и показать насколько доступно проведение такого расследования при наличии хороших инструментов и некоторого технического бэкграунда.

Исходные данные из поста EditorGIB:

«…в общей сложности с сентября до начала декабря хакеры отправили 11 073 писем с 2 900 различных электронных адресов, подделанных под госучреждения. Обнаружено около 900 различных доменов, связанных с адресами отправителей».

«…в качестве темы письма указывается «Отправка на четверг», «Служебная записка», «Оплата август-сентябрь», «Копии документов» и др.)».

«Для получения IP-адреса «C&C» сервера происходит обращение к сайту «namecha.in».

Проверим, что знают сервисы hybrid-analysis.com, virustotal.com о namecha.in. Для расследования буду использовать продукт с названием Lampyre — позиционирующий себя как «Data analysis tool for everyone», по моим впечатлениям, продукт является результатом композиции i2, Maltego и видимо разработчики вдохновлялись Palantir-ом.

Исполнение запросов Hybridanalysis search, и Virustotal search дает следующий результат:

Видно, что, имена файлов, отправленных когда-то на проверку в сервис Hybrid-analysis, схожи с именами из отчета аналитиков Group-IB.

Исполним 2 запроса Hybridanalysis report by hash с входными данными report ids, и hashes из результата предыдущего отчета. Результаты запросов отправим на схему с первоначальным графом и очистим граф от объектов, в которых пока нет необходимости. В результате получаем:

Можно увидеть, что события на графе имеют самую раннюю дату в августе 2017 года, потом провал, и возобновление использования инфраструктуры с начала лета 2018 года.

Визуализируем результат от запроса к Virustotal

Подведем промежуточный итог по объектам и результатам:

Изначально, я не имел представления о namecha.in, однако, в общих чертах выяснилось: существует проект Namecoin, еще одно использование технологий «blockchain».

Namecoin — основанная на технологии Bitcoin система хранения произвольных комбинаций вида «имя-значение», наиболее известным применением которой является система альтернативных корневых DNS-серверов.

Ресурс Namecha.in — альтернативный namecoin block explorer.

То есть по namecha.in/name/d/mail-ru-stat-counter-cdn вернется информация следующего содержания (сокращенно):

Как видно, возвращается информация об ip-адресах указанного доменного имени (mail-ru-stat-counter-cdn.bit), в том числе с ретроспективой.

Кстати, проверить разрешение доменного имени в зоне bit возможно через nslookup с сервера 91.217.137.44 (взято с bitname.ru).

С помощью поиска на namecha.in, удалось найти следующие домены в зоне *.bit, которые по типу генерации и созданию, вполне возможно имеют родственное происхождение:

Urls намекают на причастность к известным компаниям, однако тут возникают вопросы:

В виде графа выглядит так (вершины с url – удалены с графа)

По графу можно увидеть, что инфраструктура из доменов *.bit готовилась с апреля 2018 года и продолжает использоваться по настоящее время. «Случайность» доменов и ip-адресов, как мне кажется — исключена.

Итак, отталкиваясь в самом начале от факта обращения трояна RTM к namecha.in, расследование пришло к некой устойчивой инфраструктуре — сети из ip-адресов, которые однозначно могут быть частью кампании по распространению вредоносного программного обеспечения.

Всего выявлено IP-адресов: из Hybrid-analysis — 19, со схемы с namecha.in и доменами *.bit — 31.

Всего 44 уникальных IP-адресов:

А теперь, вернёмся к статье аналитика из Group-IB, к входным данным в наше исследование:

«Далее «RTM» пытается установить соединение с «C&C» сервером (были обнаружены следующие адреса: 188.165.200.156, 185.190.82.182, 5.135.183.146, 151.80.147.153, 109.69.8.34). Для получения IP-адреса «C&C» сервера происходит обращение к сайту «namecha.in».

Все эти 5 IP адресов нами были обнаружены уже по результатам первого запроса к Hybrid-analysis с аргументом namecha.in, и можно было бы заниматься только ими, но я продолжил дальше, чтобы постараться обнаружить другие IP адреса. В итоге – для анализа и исследования на предмет взаимосвязей доступны 44 IP адреса.

Уже есть понимание, что известные 5 IP-адресов должны быть как-то по каким-то признакам связаны, возможно в сети (на графе) будет очевидна связь и с другими 39 адресами, или они все будут образовывать интересную структуру.

Опять русские хакеры?

Очевидно, что и целями атак были российские предприятия, и файлы назывались по-русски, и отправка осуществлялась с различных электронных адресов, подделанных под госучреждения. Будут ли еще признаки русского следа? Что еще можно узнать по найденным выше IP – адресам?

Проверим принадлежность IP адресов к странам и получим такой результат: United States, Bulgaria, France, Austria, Canada, Czechia, Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Spain.

Проверим были ли среди найденных 44 IP-адресов узлы сети Tor, лишним осуществить такую проверку не будет.

Обратим внимание, что IP 151.80.147.153 – с 2015 года регулярный узел сети TOR, nickname: DarkOVH, email: julles.reneau@post.com, – этот IP проходит по отчету аналитика Group-IB и отчетам Hybrid-analysis.

Проверим качали ли (раздавали) с этих IP-адресов torrents.

А вот сейчас, с моей стороны будет маленький трюк – так как статья готовилась в два подхода, то я уже обоснованно предполагаю, что 188.165.200.156 может использоваться кем-то русскоговорящим, но сейчас из скриншота и таблицы — это совсем не очевидно. Ранее, в первом подходе к написанию статьи, результат от исполнения поиска по torrents содержал наряду с другими такую информацию:

То есть пользователь(ли) за этим IP – адресом понимает русскую речь? И да, 188.165.200.156 – это так же один из 5 интересных адресов.

Так вот, чтобы подтвердить предположение в рамках текущего наглядного расследования, что за IP 188.165.200.156 «сидит» кто-то очень похожий на «русского товарища» выделим следующую строку:

По id торрента направляем запрос Downloaded torrents info by ID и получаем ответ кто и с каких ip качал торрент с заданным id. Результат выглядит следующим образом:

Согласно таблице скачивающих и раздающих такой торрент — это всё русскоговорящие товарищи. Более того, Lampyre не скрывает, что использует результат сервиса iknowwhatyoudownload.com, и в принципе, любой может посмотреть содержание торрента, проследовав по ссылке — много файлов книг на русском языке.

Итоговая схема и странный ресурс

Комбинируя запросы из представленных в Lampyre и методы визуализации (укладка графа, удаление ненужных вершин, группировка вершин, изменения визуальных свойств вершин и рёбер графа) выстроилась такая схема.

В процессе возникали различные трудности, причем, по некоторым входным данным Hybrid-analysis показывал отсутствие информации, а сервис Virustotal по запросу из Lampyre возвращал один срез данных, при поиске из интерфейса по адресу www.virustotal.com/#/home/upload предоставлял другой набор данных, через поиск из интерфейса с адреса www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload – самые полные данные. Несколько связей на итоговой схеме – составлены в Lampyre в ручном режиме создания ребер.

На мой взгляд, на схеме достаточно четко показана взаимосвязь ip-адресов, названия и hash значения вредоносных файлов. Выделяется область на графе из ip-адресов: 151.80.147.153, 188.165.200.156, 5.135.183.146, 54.38.49.245, 149.202.30.7,
IP-адреса установленные аналитиками GIB — 151.80.147.153, 188.165.200.156, 5.135.183.146, 185.190.82.182, 109.69.8.34

Как видно из схемы, IP-адреса, представленные в отчете GIB — 185.190.82.182, 109.69.8.34 связаны с hash: b0cde90e300e6d86394de375cd62bb462962016521d94ee987922e61c5e4977a, который в свою очередь связан с объектом Hybrid report – с вредоносом August.scr, который первый раз зафиксирован в августе 2017 года.

Следующее событие, связанное с вредоносной активностью, начинается с июня 2018 года и по нарастающей до конца 2018 года.

По-хорошему дальше расследование можно было бы продолжить, имея на руках логи доступа управления, регистрации, оплаты и так далее к IP адресам провайдера OVH. Но увы, таких данных нет, и расследование можно было бы завершать, но…

В ходе расследования, просматривая содержание web страниц ресурсов не выходил из головы французский ресурс arthurgarnier.fr

Стоит отметить, что не выходил он из головы, потому как с него качали (раздавали) русские торренты.

Ресурс якобы принадлежит французскому инженеру «Arthur Garnier», на ресурсе даже указано его резюме — arthurgarnier.fr/CV_A_Garnier.pdf. Из которого возможно узнать: github.com/ArthurGarnier, www.linkedin.com/in/arthur-garnier-13326880. Причем, согласно резюме, оно составлено на конец 2017 года, в github.com пишет крайне редко. В профиле www.linkedin.com указано, что с октября 2017 года по настоящее время Артур работает инженером в Groupe SII. И вроде бы ничего, но, то самое но… на странице помимо прочего указан адрес twitter аккаунта Артура twitter.com/Dark_Arthur

и тут при переходе в аккаунт

Кто стоит за этим профилем, почему на сайте Артура указан русскоязычный твиттер-аккаунт, а не предполагаемо настоящий, позже найденный, аккаунт: twitter.com/UpsiloN1X – остается вопросом.

В завершение, возможно сказать, конечно, заявленная изначально цель — не достигнута, но результаты такого исследования, равно и как и сам процесс познания оказался очень увлекательным.

Остались вопросы, по аккаунту в Twitter, по перечню IP адресов, почему столько информации про «русскоязычный след». Думаю, продолжить самостоятельное расследование возможно было бы обратившись к истинному Артуру, если он до сих пор управляет своим сервером (если сервер вообще его).

Lampyre Installation and Licensing¶

Installing Lampyre¶

open the homepage and click on Try Lampyre for free to download the distribution;

wait for the distribution to install;

start Lampyre-1.X.X-prod-signed.exe installer;

select the installation directory;

wait until installation is complete.

Register your Lampyre account to obtain a license. Confirm your email address. Demo license and bonus photons will be available in your account to make requests to the Lighthouse service.

To install Lampyre on Mac, follow the instructions here.

License activation¶

Option 1:

click the Licenses tab in your user account;

copy the activation key of the available license;

run Lampyre.exe application file;

select By Internet in the Lampyre launch window and insert the Activation key;

accept the privacy policy and the license agreement, click OK. License is activated. Lampyre will start.

Option 2:

run the Lampyre.exe application file;

in the Lampyre launch window select License file and copy Device ID;

in the user’s personal account go to Licenses tab;

to activate the license, click on Activate. Specify Device ID for the license, click on Activate License;

click on Download license button;

in the Lampyre launch window select License file item, click on Browse;

select the license file on your PC, click on Open;

accept the privacy policy and the license agreement, click OK. Lampyre will start.

The Lampyre license is available for simultaneous operation on one device. To reissue the license to another device, follow these steps:

log in to your personal account and go to Licenses tab;

reissue the license for the new device:

Option 1. In Available Licenses section click on Actions, select Reissue. Enter Device ID for the new device, click on Add new device and activate license;

Option 2. In Device section click on Add new device, enter device ID, click on Add new device. Go to available licenses, click on Actions, and click on Reissue. Select Device ID from the list, click on Activate license. In this section, you can also add or change the name (or comment) of your device.

Download the license and install it as a file similar to Option 2.

What is the difference between Lampyre and Lighthouse?

Lampyre is a desktop application for Windows OS, which helps you analyze data in different visualization modes.

Lighthouse is a service, which obtains data from different open sources using such input parameters as email address, phone number, IP address, domain name and so on.

Each Lampyre license contains some Lighthouse requests depending on the type and time period of this license. Please mind that Lampyre may be used without any connection to Lighthouse.

What are photons?

Photons are our rate for sending requests to different open sources in Lighthouse. In order to see the rate of any Lighthouse request, download our price list in the Pricing section on our website https://lampyre.io.

We do not collect or store any data. We provide only live data obtained directly from the sources, that’s why our request prices may change from time to time depending on the behavior of data sources. For the same reason some requests may also become unavailable for some time or forever.

What is the difference between Enterprise and Individual licenses?

Lighthouse subscription is the same for Individual and Enterprise usage.

Lampyre Enterprise account license may be activated on 3 devices at the same time, Lampyre Individual license may be activated on no more than 1 device at the same time.

Enterprise account license includes more Lighthouse requests than Individual one. Enterprise account license allows assigning included licenses and photons to multiple users.

Can I try Lampyre or Lighthouse for free?

Yes, our newly registered users get a 1-year Lampyre demo license and 100 photons for sending requests to Lighthouse. Demo license has some limitations compared to Standard one.

Why are the results of my requests to Lighthouse via API and web lookup blurred with my free access?

In order to avoid the creation of multiple accounts with free features, we may blur some of your request results until you buy any of our products. Nevertheless, even by taking a look at these partially blurred results, you can still evaluate the capabilities of our service. After you make any purchase, all blurring will be canceled, both for future and previously obtained results as well.

Which subscription do I need if I want to use Lampyre with Lighthouse?

Lampyre Standard license is the most common thing to start working, as it contains 1000 photons (for 1-month license) or 10000 photons (for 1-year license) for sending requests to Lighthouse. If you need more photons, you can get them by purchasing any of our Lighthouse subscriptions.

All photons that you get (with both Lampyre licenses and Lighthouse subscriptions) can be also spent on requests via API or web interface in your account.

I want to work with Lighthouse. Do I need a Lampyre license?

No, you don’t necessarily need to purchase a Lampyre license. You may send requests to Lighthouse through our web interface in your account, through API or in the Lampyre app using your free demo license.

What are Lampyre requests and what do they cost?

A Lampyre request is a script, which triggers one or a few Lighthouse requests and then turns the obtained results into a table, graph or a map to visualize it in Lampyre. The cost of any Lampyre request comprises the cost of all the Lighthouse requests that are triggered. Our detailed request price list is available in the Pricing section on our website https://lampyre.io.

How can I prolong my subscription?

Every product that you purchase has its Auto-renewal option ON by default. One week until the end of the subscription term we notify our users by email that their product is about to be renewed. You can turn auto-renewal off any time without cancelling the subscription.

Where can I find info on my active subscriptions and licenses and manage their status?

Will my photons expire and if yes, when?

Photons are valid for a year since the moment of your last purchase (of any product) in our Store, no matter the subscription period.

Your use of products, services and associated services confirms your unconditional acceptance of these terms and conditions. If you do not agree to these terms of use, please do not access or use the website or any Service for any purpose.

1. General provisions

1.1. This License Agreement (“License”) establishes the terms of use of the Company’s products and services DATA TOWER Kft. and is made between the person using Products and Services (“User”) and DATA TOWER Kft., which is the right holder of the exclusive right to Products and Services (“Right Holder”).

1.2. All Products and Services are the intellectual property of the Right Holder, including but not limited to design, functionality and documentation, except for the result of the execution of requests through the Lighthouse service.

1.3. Products and Services are licensed for use only under the terms of this License. If the User does not accept the terms of the License in full, the User shall not use Products and Services for any purpose. Use of Products and Services in violation of or failure to comply with any of the Terms of the License is prohibited.

1.4. Any violation of the Terms of use of the Lampyre software and the Lighthouse service will result in an immediate termination of your Services.

1.5. The general principles of the “lex mercatoria” right are subject to this License, any claims or claims arising from this License or use of the Products and Services shall be filed and considered in the state court at the location of the Right Holder.

2. License Grant Procedure.

2.1. The Right Holder grants the User a non-transferable right to use the Products and Services under a simple (non-exclusive) license, throughout the world, excluding Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria in accordance with US export laws. You warrant and represent that neither the U.S. Bureau of Export Administration nor any other federal agency has suspended, revoked, or denied your export privileges for the period specified in paragraph 2.3. of this License.

2.2. Products and Services are provided to the User through access; no equipment is provided. If the User gets access data for downloading (for example, license file, usernames, passwords, etc.), the User will keep all access data strictly confidential and will not transfer them to third parties. The User will take reasonable steps to protect access data from unauthorized use by third parties. The User immediately notifies the Right Holder in writing of any access to the data by any unauthorized party.

2.3. License for Products and Services is granted for a fixed period determined by the License type. Functional limitations and license costs are listed in the price list at https://lampyre.io/products.

All Lighthouse subscriptions are valid for 1 calendar month or 1 calendar year according to the purchased subscription plan. All unused photons will expire in a year after the last batch purchase. Once this period expires, all unused photons expire as well. Bonus photons provided with Licence Type 2 and Type 3 are valid for one calendar year from the date of License purchase, and if unused, also expire.

2.4 The payment is done by users through outer payment systems. The Right Holder does not collect or store any data on the payment means. All such data is processed by the payment system (https://www.braintreepayments.com/hu/legal).

2.5 The prices of all Lighthouse requests in photons are defined by the price list, available here: https://lampyre.io/pricing. The prices may be changed by the Right Holder without prior notice to the Customers. The prices shown in the Lampyre application right before executing any request are always the correct ones. One should revert to the Price list to define the prices of API and web requests. If there is a new request method, which has not been added to the price list yet, its price can be provided by request via support@lampyre.io.

2.6. Upon License termination, the User shall immediately and completely stop using the Products and Services, delete all copies of the Lampyre software. In this case, the Rights Holder deactivates the license keys / files (if any were provided to the User) and interrupts access to the servers, and the User will have no complaints against the Right Holder in this regard.

The Right Holder may terminate Products and Services any time, the License for Products and Services will be terminated on the date of cancellation of their support.

2.7. Use of Products and Services on terms and in ways not covered by this License is only possible upon a separate agreement with the Right Holder.

3. Restrictions

3.1. By using the Products and Services, the User agrees to use the services, including all functions and all features in accordance with all laws, regulations and rules that apply to such use.

3.2. Licenses for Products and Services involve the right to browse the web pages of Products and Services. The User can download, install, launch and use the Lampyre software to solve analytical tasks. The User can make requests to the Lighthouse service him in accordance with the documentation and use the request result at his own discretion. The User may back up the software and Lampyre license file if necessary for backup purposes.

3.3. The User agrees not to copy Products and Services or documentation for purposes other than those specified in clause 3.2. of this License

3.4. The User agrees not to perform unauthorized access (hacking) to Products and Services and to take actions aimed at violating the confidentiality, integrity and availability of Products and services.

3.5. The User agrees not to change, modify, disassemble, decompile or reconstruct Products and Services or allow any third party to do so. The User agrees not to bypass any licensing functions, receive the source code underlying the Products and Services. The User agrees not to sell, lease, sublicense Products and Services or otherwise provide Products and Services to the third parties.

3.6. The User shall not use the design of Products and Services for commercial purposes, audiovisual and graphic materials of the Products and Services, any elements of their design or user interface, without the written permission of the Right Holder to perform these actions.

4. License Responsibility

4.1. Products and services are provided “as is”.

The Right Holder does not warrant that operation of Products and Services or its individual components and / or functions will be error-free or uninterrupted, or complied with the specific purposes and expectations of the User, does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness of data, and does not provide any other guarantees specified in this License.

4.2. The Right Holder shall not be liable for any direct or indirect consequences of any use or inability to use the Products and services and / or damage caused to the User and / or third parties as a result of any use, disuse or inability to use the Products and Services, including due to possible errors or malfunctions of the Products and services, except as expressly provided by law.

4.3. All questions and claims concerning the use / inability to use the Products and Services, possible violation of law and / or rights of third parties should be sent by email privacy@lampyre.io.

5. Updates / New Versions

5.1. This License applies to all future updates / new versions of Products and Services, unless covered by a different license.

5.2. The Right Holder provides support as follows:

(a) The Right Holder and / or its Contractors provide basic support by email support@lampyre.io.

(b) The Right Holder may release updates to a specific version of Products and Services specify them for use by the User during the term of the License for Products and Services, but the Right Holder is not obliged to create or release any updates. The Right Holder can terminate any obligations concerning support of the previous version of Products and Services with update available.

6. Third Party Services

6.1 The Lampyre software and Lighthouse service request results may display third-party request results, including links to other independent third-party websites («Third Party Services»).

6.2 The User acknowledges and agrees that such Third Party Services are not under the Right Holder’s control, and the Right Holder is not responsible for the content of such Third Party Services, including any information or materials contained on such Third Party Services, including their accuracy, completeness, timeliness, reliability, respect for copyright, legality, decency, quality or any other aspects.

6.3 The Right Holder shall not bear any responsibility to the User or any individual or legal entity for any Third Party Services.

6.4 These Third Party Services are provided solely as a convenience to the User, and the User will need to make his own independent judgment regarding the interaction with these Third Party Services.

6.5 As the Right Holder does not control any 3rd party services, he may turn off or delete any requests or crawlers, communicating to these 3rd party services without prior notice to the users.

7. Compliance of Products and Services

7.1. For documentation on the functionality of Products and Services, see: https://lampyre.io/documentation/. The Right Holder may revise the documentation from time to time. The documentation may include end-user manuals, operating instructions, installation manuals, release notes, and other information.

7.2. The Right Holder is not obliged to perform any installation and configuration for Products and Services. The Right Holder does not guarantee that the User equipment hardware and software specifications and connection method comply with the requirements of the Products and services provided by the Right Holder. The relevant section of the documentation lists the system requirements for Products and Services.

7.3. The User can inform the Right Holder of defects in Services and Products by ways specified in paragraphs 5.2. of this License.

8. Changes to the terms of this License

8.1. This License may be changed by the Right Holder unilaterally. The Company will publish changes to the terms of this License at: https://lampyre.io/license/ and the User shall independently monitor its changes. The changes will be effective, unless otherwise stated, immediately after posting on our website.

8.2 The user also accepts any updated version of this agreement by continuing to use the Services. If the User does not agree to these Terms, the User should not access or otherwise use any of the Services or Products.
