When you are thinking about creating a new website, a domain name is quite often the first thing that comes to mind.
In the beginning, the internet relied solely on IP addresses to identify web pages, which worked at the time because there were relatively few websites and they were not accessible to a wide audience. The format we all know today was created to replace this system because strings of digits were complicated for humans to memorize.
Today, websites usually use an address that starts with «www» followed by a domain name and its domain name ending, or TLD – Top Level Domain (‘.com,’ ‘.de,’ ‘.co.uk,’ etc.).
How a domain name works
What is a domain name?
Used as the starting point for all webpages, a domain name often corresponds to the name of the company or brand which owns the site. It takes the form of ‘example.com,’ ‘example.fr,’ etc. While there are no restrictions as to the name itself, this is the most commonly seen approach.
When you register or buy a domain name (such as ‘example.fr’), you create a unique and unalterable address. Modifying the slightest element in this domain name is the same as creating a new one. Even a different domain ending leads to a unique domain name. So ‘example.fr’ and ‘example.com’ may direct users to two distinct websites belonging to two different people and dealing with completely unrelated topics.
Domain name search
For all the many websites on the internet to be identified, every single domain name must be unique and needs to be registered through a registrar. When you buy a domain from Gandi, it will be marked as ‘unavailable’ to anyone doing a domain name search for the same domain name for a minimum of one year. This domain name is reserved for you and you are free to use it for your own site without running the risk of it no longer being available to you.
Domain name renewal
It is possible to buy a domain name before you even begin to use it. Similarly, renewing it when it is about to expire (usually after one year) is just as important. If you allow your domain name to expire, it will become available to other internet users again when they do a domain name search. However, Gandi does offer automatic renewal to help avoid this situation.

Our hosting solution is built a little differently as each instance has its own private Linux container (LXC).
