Retain certification
CompEx certification lasts for 5 years. Its important to make sure knowledge and skills are up to date and workers remain competent to work in explosive atmospheres.
Retaining certification
Renew your CompEx certification every 5 years
All CompEx certificates are issued with an expiry date and it is important that practitioners attend a CompEx course before that date if they want to retain their certification.
Choose the right course that meets your experience
For some people they will have been working regularly in hazardous areas, but for others it might be infrequent or not something they have done for a few years. For Gas and Vapours (Ex01-Ex04) and Fuel Forecourts (Ex07-Ex08) there are tailored two-day refresher courses available. Employers and practitioners should consider the knowledge, skills and recent experience when deciding which course to attend for recertification. Attending a full course may be more appropriate as it gives learners more classroom time ahead of practical assessments and theory examinations.
Revision and pre-course preparation
Employers should make sure that their staff have plenty of notice before attending a course, particularly for either of the Refresher courses (Ex01-04 and Ex07-Ex08).
It is important that you come fully prepared by completing enough revision of key topics such as relevant standards, regulations and directives; ignition sources; risk reduction; protection concepts; hazardous area classification; equipment marking and selection. Practical skills are also assessed so make sure that you can gland, terminate and inspect a variety of cables and equipment suitable for explosive atmospheres.

Compex

Foundation plus (ExF+)
An introduction into potentially explosive atmospheres.
Foundation plus (ExF+)
The CompEx Foundation plus qualification, is an alternative to the CompEx Foundation qualification. This course covers the same theory-based learning, but also includes practical training that allows candidates to learn the correct techniques for glanding and terminating low voltage cables in hazardous locations.
Attendees
This qualification is suitable for electrical or instrumentation technicians who are new to working in hazardous areas, trainees, and recently qualified technicians who wish to develop their knowledge of working safely in hazardous areas.
With its practical element, the CompEx Foundation Plus qualification is ideal for those considering the Ex01-Ex04 Gas and Vapours qualification, which includes a number of practical assessments.
Entry requirements:
Duration
Approximately 2 days, depending on the training provider.
Delivery
The Foundation Plus qualification provides candidates with a basic understanding of the regulations, directives and standards associated with hazardous locations.
This course provides an overview of where gases, vapours or dust could potentially create an explosive or flammable atmosphere, how hazardous areas are classified, the safe working practices that should be followed and the basic protection concepts used for certifying Ex equipment.
The course uses a combination of theoretical and applied learning, including how to correctly identify, install and terminate certified Ex cable glands and conductors. This practical element means that the qualification is primarily aimed at technical personnel who wish to develop their abilities before undertaking more technical CompEx qualifications.
Key learning objectives
Candidates that successfully complete the CompEx Foundation Plus qualification will be able to:
