Карибы – кто такие?
Далеко не каждый народ оставляет своё имя на картах на многие века. Карибам оказалось это под силу, но вот загадка: они не были многочисленным племенем, не являлись выдающимися строителями или основателями необыкновенной культуры.
На фоне соседних народов карибы выделялись лишь своим жестоким и воинственным нравом. Они вели постоянные войны за право владеть богатыми землями, а когда колонизаторы посягнули на их земли, оказали им такое сопротивление, какое те совершенно не ожидали от «дикого» племени островитян. Какой был уклад жизни этих индейцев? Какой путь проделали они, чтобы дать возможность свободно жить своим потомкам?
Название – от чужестранцев
Название «карибы» произошло от европейского наименования народа, сами же индейцы называли себя иначе. Меня немало удивило, что в заметках исследователя XVII века Раймонда Бретона отмечается, будто карибы (или караибы как их ещё называют) по-разному именуют женщин и мужчин своего народа.
Женщины-карибы считали себя калипонам, а мужчины – калинаго. Однако сегодня мы знаем их родину как Карибские острова и, надо отметить, лишь карибам удалось вот так увековечить своё название (пусть и данное им чужестранцами).
Богатыри среди индейцев
На мой взгляд, предки карибов выглядели внушительно. В старинных источниках они описываются как одно из самых могущественных индейских племён, представителей которого можно было отметить по высокому росту и крепкому телосложению.
Пугающие истории
Но далеко не военное снаряжение делало карибов великими завоевателями своего времени. Изначально они проживали в Гвиане, однако в ходе успешных войн начинают оттеснять местные племена, после чего решаются на более серьёзный шаг.
Карибы отправляются к Малым Антильским островам, покоряют новые земли с необыкновенной лёгкостью. Позднее они практически полностью завоевали Ямайку и Гаити.
На карте эти территории могут показаться не слишком обширными, но только вдумайтесь: карибы никогда не были огромным народом, а значит, такие завоевания были просто невероятным событием для небольшого племени. В чём же был секрет такого успеха? Мне кажется, в крайней жестокости карибов, одни рассказы о которых наводили ужас на многие народы.
Как утверждали представители племени араваков, общавшиеся с европейскими путешественниками, среди карибов было немало каннибалов. Некоторые учёные даже отмечают сходство слов «кариба» и «каниба», как называл одно из племён Колумб.
После своих нападений на менее воинственные племена карибы старались уничтожить всех мужчин, однако женщин и детей не трогали. Им разрешалось говорить на родном языке, а потому в ходе истории вышло так, что у карибов появилось два языка: один – чистый, мужской, а второй – с примесью разных наречий, женский.
Противостояние с испанцами
Несмотря на то, что Колумба и его соратников шокировали обычаи карибов, именно с открытия Америки начинается чёрная полоса в жизни этого народа. Когда испанцы вторгаются на остров Доминика, индейцы оказывают им решительное сопротивление.
Разницы в численности воинов, вооружении давала себя знать, но я искренне восхищаюсь этими мужественными борцами: они сумели сдерживать европейцев более 200 лет!
Даже после подавления сил островитян они не сдались на милость чужестранцев, не стали их рабами, а отошли в труднодоступные районы острова, укрывшись за скалами и непроходимыми горами.
В наше время в мире насчитывается около 150 тысяч карибов, среди которых немало так называемых «чёрных» представителей этого народа (результат смешения с рабами-неграми, завезёнными европейцами). А вот чистокровных карибов совсем немного – около 2 тысяч человек.
Что интересно, современные карибы расселились не только на исторической родине, но и в Гондурасе, Гватемале. Выходит, что они даже у испанских завоевателей сумели отнять часть земель, ранее не принадлежавших им.
Мастера судостроения
Самое известное древнее искусство карибов – это изготовление каноэ. Такие лодки помогали индейцам совершать дальние путешествия, торговать с соседними островами, выходить в море за рыбой. Тяжёлое каноэ едва ли смогут поднять 10 европейцев, однако, по свидетельствам очевидцев, карибы могут перенести своё транспортное средство вчетвером.
Особенность технологии изготовления каноэ заключается в том, что судно выдалбливается из цельного ствола дерева. Только представьте, какой это долгий и тяжёлый труд!
На изготовление одного каноэ порой уходит больше месяца, однако и сегодня карибы нередко пользуются своими судами, которые отличаются надёжностью и прекрасными мореходными свойствами.
Лозоплетение – одно из древних искусств карибов
Даже современных карибов можно назвать истинными детьми природы. Многие столетия они живут на своих землях, узнавая секреты лечебных трав и корней, а потому среди карибов немало потомственных целителей. Даже сегодня этот народ удивляет нас своими суевериями.
Например, карибы верят, что женщине нельзя играть на музыкальном инструменте, а красный цвет непременно принесёт удачу. Всё это отличает их от нас, однако добавляет очарования тем, чьи предки некогда были грозными и воинственными завоевателями, отстоявшими свои земли для будущих поколений.
