The game has issues with switching out from extreamly high resolutions of desktop to the defult game res which is 1024×768. So you may need to turn them down. My desktop is set for 1280×1024 so I can use the SH3 editor. The game on test can seem to switch out from this setting for me.
The game plays like a new game, but really it was made back for WIN2000 and XPSP2. If you start the game, and hear sound but get a black screen, just hit Esc, it tends to do that on a Newer OS.
Unless your useing a mod, steam version tends to reject it more than a DVD copy..

So, ive been having a very common message which a bunch of other people have been getting.
However, I have tried multiple alternatives, even going as far as the Donitz Elite Flotta and the Ubisoft German Forums, I have changed resolution, Hz, and Fullscreen settings, and have uninstalled multiple times.
Unfortunately, none of that has worked. Anybody got any other ideas?
Just a note, I do run Windows 7 64 bit, all the other specs are way above the reccomended for this game. Not sure if that’ll help.
I experienced the same problem exactly today, starting the game again after 2 years. On this same computer it worked without problem before.
Now when I started it with the widescreen mods (I tried two various mods), I got the 3D initialization error. When I started it without widescreen mod, after the intros I got only a black screen. It happened with the GWX and LSH install too.
It solved me the blackscreen and 3D problems, but now when I start the game with widescreen mods, they don’t work, the resolution is still 4:3.
Do you have AMD GPU? I guess the problem can be related to AMD drivers.

Sorry for my Absence. I actually managed to fix it.
I went into the main.cfg and set FullScreen to Yes and actually deleted the Resolution. By Pure Luck, it worked. Maybe it auto-set the Resolution or something.
Thank you for the help, however. Incase this ever happens again I will be sure to use this as a reference page.

Right now the only idea i can give you is to go into the main.cfg and change FullScreen to No. The game will run (hopefully), but it will only take up about 2/3 of your computer screen.

Unfortunately this did not help either. I actually also tried several different resolutions on main.cfg, no luck. I somehow guess it has to do with the 4k Monitor on my notebook, though I cannot be a 100% sure. I also tried several tweaks on my Nvidia settings, but that was just me randomly changing some settings for sh3.exe without really knowing what I was doing.
Theres one last trick up my sleeve,
Try deleting the Resolution
For some computers like mine, if the game dosent have a set resolution, it will automatically set it to the correct one, which will make the game work.
However, if it dosen’t work you will have to reinstall your game to reset the files since it may break the game.

Thank you! This helped me get the game running. I didn’t have any luck using the custom DirectX9 DLL suggested in other posts. Here is a restatement of Liderc’s instructions:
1. Change the Windows desktop resolution to 1024×768
2. Run SH3.exe to start the game
3. In the video setting menu, uncheck the full screen option
4. Save your game settings and exit the game
5. Return your Windows desktop resolution to its normal value
6. Re-run the game and it will appear in a 1024×768 window
When i got it running in window mode, like is discribed above. I checked the full screen option again, saved it, exited the game, started it up again. And now it’s running fine on fullscreen with a 1920×1080 desktop resolution.

Aside from the fix posted here, is there any other work around this problem?
My native resolution is 1920×1200, has anyone got it to run at this res without the tiny window?
I confirm it works well : change desktop res to 1024×768. Start the game and follow all the procedure described upper.
While the game runs correctly in window mode, check full screen again and quit/relaunch.
It works for me in full screen with 1920×1080 wide screen
Platform info : Windows 7 64 bits Pro. NVidia GTX 560 Ti, DirectX 11

I have a Windows 8 computer, and changing the screen resolution didn’t help! It still comes up with the same error, PLEASE HELP ME!

The problem on the Chessmaster 10th Cannot initialize 3D engine is that the game support only 1024×768 on screen resolution. Do that and works fine. Peace for all.

This sounds like a setting that can be adjusted. What I like about some of the Sharp televisions is the av mode setting (preset brightness/contrast adjustments). Have you installed DirectX 9.0c on your computer? SH III needs DX 9.0c to run correctly. Probably why you are getting this error message.
yeas I have directX 9.0 on my computer and I still geting that error

I use Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 but every thing elese is all right
That is your problem, it is your Intel Graphics. Intel Graphics and SH III is not a very good combination or for that matter SH IV. I would suggest that you upgrade to a more powerful graphics card which will run SH III for you.

You need to install DX 9.0c on your computer. SHIII needs this in order to run correctly even though you have DX 11 on your computer. Installing DX 9.0c will not harm your computer, DX in backward compatible.
