Question
I know there are tons of similar questions on here but none have seemed to be able to help me, and it seems I have a slightly different issue.
I’ve been having issues with Windows Explorer crashing on me. The thing is, unlike a lot of people who have similar issues, mine doesn’t necessarily crash when I try to open a picture/video folder or something like that. It’s entirely random. I can have no items open, click on an empty section of the explorer bar, and it’ll crash. I can usually tell if it’s not responding by the fact that the clock stops working until it reboots. I’ve read the solutions others have posted about ShellExView, but the only 3rd party context menu applications of relevance I found installed were:
Bluewire General Property Sheet (listed as type: Property Sheet, but description lists it as a ContextH Application)
GB Context Menu Class (a.k.a. the Razer Gaming Company’s game booster program)
All other non-microsoft context menu applications belonged to either McAfee, Intel, AMD, or Bluetooth Software. Is there something I’m missing, or is there another way I need to go about approaching this problem? Reliability Monitor in Control Panel’s maintenance section was of no help either, as it could not find a solution to the problem. I even went so far as to run sfc/scannow and it could not find any problems either. Any suggestions?

Windows Explorer has stopped working»,
Restart the program»
Windows 7 Ultimate N sp1 (х64)
Вот что именно было сделано;
http://7themes.su/publ/kak_ustanovit_temy_dlja_windows_7/1-1-0-1
запустила «UniversalThemePatcher-x64.exe» и нажала «path»
заменила «explorerframe 64bit» и картинку «new start button.bmp»

Thread: [RESOLVED] Right click crashes WD’s Explorer
Thread Tools
Search Thread
Display
I didn’t notice anything was wrong until about 3 days ago, but the problem could have existed before then since I had had no reason to right click anything lately.
Three days ago I tried right clicking on a folder on my D drive so that I could change the name of the folder. At first it looked as if WD Explorer was just going to hang, but it never did do anything, so I tried to close out the window I was in—and it crashed. I had to use the task manager to stop the hang and when the window finally closed, I got an error message saying that «Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience when you right click a folder.»
I thought this was just a fluke, but when I went back into the main folder and right clicked the sub-folder again, it did the same thing again. I stopped trying to rename the folder and just waited a day to try again. Same thing each day. So then I put in a Google search for the problem and it gave me Windows 7 Forum as having the solution. I went there and this is what I found on the site:
Error message “Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience» when you right-click a folder.
These problems are caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc). A poorly coded context menu handler may be causing this symptom. As context menu handlers can be added in different areas (file class, folder, allfilesystemobjects, HKCR\* registry keys), it’s a difficult task for an end-user to pinpoint which shell extension is causing the problem.
Using ShellExView to determine the Context-menu causing the problem:
ShellExView (by Nir Sofer) is an excellent tool to view and manage all installed shell extensions. If available, it displays the description, as well as version details, company information, location, file name and more. You can optionally disable/enable any item, which can be very useful to disable an extension, that you don’t need or that has been left behind in your right click menu from a previous software install.
Effective usage of ShellExView to resolve right-click problems:
Download ShellExView (from nirsoft.net) and run it. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using «Type», so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.
The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.
Even more quicker method is to bisect the list of context menu handlers into two groups, disabling half of the entries at a stretch, rebooting and testing the behavior again. JClarke commented on this article:
It worked, so I knew I just had to narrow it down, just as we used to do with msconfig. Then I kept bisecting the list until it was just a few and did those one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling. I didn’t find logging off to be consistent.
NOTE: It’s not always the Context menu handler, but a PropertySheet handler or an Icon Handler may be the culprit sometimes. Some readers have reported that the Property Sheet handler «IIS W3ext Module» was responsible for the folder properties issue (See Case:8 in the Symptoms section above), in a Windows XP Professional system, and that reinstalling IIS from Add/Remove Windows Components fixed the problem.
So first I tried the last suggestion of running sfc/scannon and got an error message from windows saying that I this did not exist and to check my typing for errors. So next I put a space between the word, sfc and / thinking that maybe there was suppose to be a space there since that is the way it looked in the above quote. But nothing happened when I hit run.
So next I went to the site where the link above said, «Download ShellExView (from Nir Sofer). I got to that site but the file was not clickable for me. Next I went to C-Net and put a search in for ShellExView by Nir Sofer in the download section. It was listed in their download section and the editor had given it an excellent review and 4 1/2 stars. I downloaded it from C-Net and then ran it.
When the window opened from the program, I went to the options and picked Type and also highlight all non-Microsoft shells. But I had no idea which ones I should disable because the list looked nothing like I thought it would look. At first I tried copying and pasting everything showing in the window into a Word document, but it did not paste as it looked in the window and was hard to read. So next, I just clicked on each file that was shown not to be a MS file, and chose «Properties» then copied and pasted what was shown here. The following is what I copied and pasted about all the Non-MS files:

I don’t know, maybe I am using this program the wrong way, I just have no idea. I just know that the only thing I can right click is within a document and within my Fire Fox browser—no right clicking on anything else. I could not even right click on a photo and look at the properties.
Oh, and another thing I noticed is that my SuperAntiSpyware is no longer showing in my system tray even though I did not stop it from running. Until today the only things I have downloaded and installed was Windows Update a couple of days ago and Windows Essential update (just done today).
Using:
Windows 7 64 bit
Firefox 3.6.18
Avast
SuperAntiSpyware
Thanks for any help you offer,
That is what happens when we try to mess with juntion points insead of files.

Train: Sorry it took so long to get back here but we had a «wind storm» (no rain!) and our power got knocked out for hours.
Train I went to those links you posted and read all the way through them and then read what you posted about your junctions, and I know this sounds dumb, but all this is very techy to me and way over my head . I read and re-read the articles, but could not get a sense of what all this meant.
Is there a better way to explain this in lay terms so a person who is not all that techy can understand what you and these articles are talking about? I have no idea how all of this is suppose to help me figure out how to solve my right click problem, but maybe if I understood the articles I might understand what I need to do.
Thanks,
It is 2 AM here on the east cost in the US so I am going to bed now—will check back in the morning.
Goodnight all,
Wind storm, the main thing is you are OK with the plus you were able to post.
Junctions are like fake points, folders or whatever, that were put in the OS so some programs, that require that item, will install and run right.
We can not change there names or anything else, actually there were some in XP, more in Vista and Win7.
There were three problems with the way you attempted to run the SFC (system file check) command.
1) You don’t «hit run» at a command (cmd) prompt, you press the [Enter] key.
2) The very last letter of the command must be a w (not a n)
3) And as you mentioned, you forgot the space between the first c and the slash
To get to a CMD (command) prompt in Windows XP, click the Start button, click Run, type in the three letters:
and then press the [Enter] key.
Note 1) You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP CD.
Note 2) There is no message when SFC is done. It simply exits back to the CMD (command) prompt.
Note 3) Make sure you then visit http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and get at least all the updates marked ‘Critical’.
(Gotta run for now, but, I do intend on being back).
Before running the System File Checker, you would probably be better off using System Restore to roll back to a point before the trouble started. That usually fixes glitches such as you have described.
Train: The folder I was attempting to change the name of was not a system folder, it was a folder I created a long time ago to put certain word documents in. I am sorry if I some how mislead you about the folder I was attempting to change the name of. Thank you for explaining what junction points were because I had never heard of them until you mentioned them. I learn something new almost every time I come here!
Spyware Dr.: I think it was a typing error when I typed the word «scannon» here on this forum. But you never know, maybe I did type the wrong word. And I know I posted «run» but now that I think about what I did, I am pretty sure I hit «Enter», because I don’t think after you type in the command that there is a icon for you to hit «run». And from now on, I will keep it in mind that I always have to put a space between the last c and the slash. I have never ran this scan before so I didn’t know about it.
Also, I don’t have Windows XP, I have Windows 7 Premium 64 bit, so I can’t follow those instructions for Windows XP. I just did a Windows update the other day, so I have all the critical updates for Windows 7. But I do have to say, it seems as if every time I do a Windows update then something afterwards is usually wrong with my computer.
So SuperSparks, your suggestion is to roll back to a System Restore rather than a System File Checker? Other than ease and less time, is there more of an advantage to using System Restore than System File Checker? The reason I am asking this is because I don’t know exactly when this problem first occurred because as I said in an earlier post, I have not had to use right click for some time (other than within a Word Document & Firefox), so I don’t know what date to roll it back too. And I would have to run all those Windows Update again and possibly just acquire the same problem again if Windows Update caused it in the first place.
Thanks everyone for your input,
Use a Command Prommpt window to change the name of the folder.
jdc: One of the first things I did was to download ShellExView (by Nir Sofer) before I posted here, but could not figure out from looking at all the different context handlers which ones to disable. I didn’t know I should also download ShellMenuView. I am going to download ShellMenuView and then come back here and tell you what I did. I really did like the last link, PC Utility Manager, it sounded like something I really would like. Then after reading all the way through the article and getting very enthused about it, at the end of the article the author said:
That was a disappointment even though I did notice in one of the images it said something about «show add banners while surfing the Internet»—I wondered about ADD Ware then.
I will post back after I finish with ShellMenuView.
Thanks,
Items 2, 4, 5, 6, and 10 from your first post would be the ones I would try disabling, one at a time, to see if the problem goes away. I found another Shell Extension program for enabling and disabling, adn adding items earlier, but now I can’t locate it again. I may try more searching for solutions again later.
jdc: We must have been both posting at the same time because your post was not there when I first started my last reply. Thanks for the tip on which ones to try to disable first—I had no idea which one to try.
Thanks,
xcore.dll is a FileMaker Pro Core Classes belonging to FileMaker from FileMaker, Inc.
Do you have it installed?
Train: I don’t think I have that installed, at least I never installed it—unless it came with the computer.
This is what has happened since I last posted. (Sorry for the delay but my hungry husband really wanted his supper so I had to stop and cook.) When I got back on my computer I ran the ShellExView program again and started one by one disabling all the ones that jdc told me to try disabling first. None of it helped. But then I discovered some weird things and also has some weird happenings. For one thing, earlier my SuperAntiSpyware was missing from my system tray. Then it was back again, so I decided to run an update on it. But it would not let me double click or right click on it either one—it was as stiff as a board, if that is possible. Then right in the middle of my trying to disable things in the Shell program, all of a sudden SuperAntiSpyware popped up and said that something was trying to change my IE homepage and did I want to block the change—naturally I clicked yes. Then it popped right back up again and said the same thing—so I clicked yes. This must have happened at least 20 times, one right after another. I don’t even use IE, but I knew I didn’t want something changing it. Finally, I got tired of clicking to block and then changed the option to say don’t notify me again when something is trying to change my home page. I don’t know weather something is wrong with my SuperAntiSpyware program or not, but later something with it happened again. This time a window popped up from SuperAntiSpyware and said there was a new update and did I want to install it. But when I tried to click yes for it to download the new update, SuperAntiSpyware crashed and I had to use the task manager to close it out. Now it no longer runs in my system tray.
By now I was getting very frustrated. So my next bright idea was maybe I could use the snip it tool to post what all was listed in the ShellExView window. Would me posting the list help anyone to figure out what is going on? I had to snip it in piece meal because if I tried to scroll the window in order to get everything snipped, then the snip it tool went away. So I had to enlarge the window as much as I could without loosing the snip it tool and just snip a few of the list at a time. There was a little over 200 things on the list. I will wait to hear from someone before I try to post these snip its, just in case you don’t think that it would help to post them. Oh, and another thing, when I was inside the folder where the jpgs of the list was kept, I went to «File» to tell it to move one of the photos, but when I clicked on «File» it crashed too. So now trying to right click on folders and also clicking on «file» crashes my computer. I am about ready to give up and do a restore as suggested at the beginning. But if I do a restore, I will need someone to tell me where to go in Windows 7 to get to it and how to do it. I have never had to restore my computer before.
Thanks for your patience,
I think the problem had to do with SuperAntiSpyware all along. The reason I said this, is because it came back into my system tray while I was away from my computer, and when I got back, up pops another window and asks me if I want to update my spyware program. I hesitated in clicking it because the last time I did, it crashed my desktop. This time when I clicked it, it worked and updated the program, then had me to reboot, and after rebooting I went back into the folder where the sub-folder was that I wanted to rename. This time it worked!
So just to make sure this was not a fluke, I started right clicking other folders and also things on my desktop, and also clicking on «File» inside of Windows Explorer—everything worked and nothing crashed!! I am mystified why SuperAntispyware would cause this problem in the first place, just does not make any sense to me. But I am as happy as I can be and just hope like heck that this continues from now on. I hope tomorrow when I wake up that that problem won’t be back!
I can’t thank everyone enough for all your suggestions and for the trouble you went to to help me.
Thanks so much!
