Кто начал празднование Black History Month?
В США Black History Month был впервые организован историком Картером Вудсоном (1875-1950). Black History Month: What is it and why does it matter?

October marks Black History Month in the UK. The event was officially recognised by the US government in 1976, and first celebrated in the UK in 1987.
Why is Black History Month necessary?
People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British history for centuries. However, campaigners believe their value and contribution to society is often overlooked, ignored or distorted.
Most schools still teach a history curriculum which focuses on traditional events and the achievements of white figures. Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.
More recently, greater attention has been paid to the importance of the Windrush generation and the Black Lives Matter movement, especially since the death of George Floyd in May 2020.
Where did Black History Month originate?
Known as the «Father of Black History», Carter G Woodson was born in Virginia in 1875 and was the son of former slaves. Growing up, access to a good education and job opportunities were limited, but he ended up studying at one of the few high schools for black students after saving money from working as a coal miner.
Over the years he gained an impressive number of qualifications, including a PhD in history from Harvard University. In 1926 he sent out a press release to mark the first Black History Week in the US. Throughout his life, Carter G Woodson worked tirelessly to promote black history in schools, leaving an indelible legacy.
The event was expanded in 1970, and since 1976 every US president has officially designated February as Black History Month in the US.
How is Black History Month celebrated?
The event is intended to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It’s also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes.
When Black History Month first started in the UK, there was a big focus on black American history. Over time there has been more attention on black British history and key black figures from the UK, such as:
Black History Month is also celebrated in the community in places such as museums, care homes and workplaces. A broad range of topics is covered, from Britain’s colonial past to migration and music.
Government funding is available to local organisations to help mark Black History Month in their area. Some of the UK’s leading organisations include The Windrush Foundation, National Archives and 100 Great Black Britons.
Black History Month website deletes article calling white people ‘genetically defective mutants’
The Black History Month website is not run by the British government, but is one of the most prominent outlets promoting the month, and has featured content by prominent British politicians, all of whom pledge their support for the event and pledge to “fight for racial justice”, as Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey wrote in an article published on the site on Friday.
It has also featured far more provocative and racist content. A 2016 article on the site examined the work of American psychiatrist Frances Cress Welsing, who theorized that white people were originally “genetically defective mutants” who were driven from Africa by the black natives.
Once expelled from the continent, Welsing argued, white people turned to racism and “white supremacy” to “protect this mutation”, and their lack of the skin pigment melanin encouraged their deviation from morality. “Blackness,” Welsing opined, was therefore “an established basis for moral, or more specifically, normal human behaviour.”
The article was still available on the site as recently as this week, according to an investigation by The Telegraph. Alongside the article, the website hosts taxpayer-funded recruitment ads for the British Armed Forces, government agencies and police services, as well as ads for several UK universities.
It was pulled from the site after The Telegraph’s investigation, but other racially questionable content is still live. A 2020 article by the Reach Society – a social enterprise via which black professionals mentor black boys, and that is in receipt of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – states that “Europeans have been encouraged to be morally monstrous to non-Europeans for so long, this behaviour has become second nature”, for example.
The website is linked to a magazine of the same name, and appears as the top search result for ‘Black History Month’ in the UK. Bizarrely, it is run by a white advertising executive and was established as a private business, rather than a charity. However, the executive and his business partner told The Telegraph the site makes only enough money to cover its costs and doesn’t turn a profit.
Its ownership has angered Linda Bellos, a former London councillor who helped launch Black History Month in the 1980s. “The whole purpose of Black History Month is to empower us … I don’t want some white man, or even white woman, playing that role,” she told The Telegraph. “The taking of ideas, and, indeed, the taking of people, was done very successfully by the British. It is called enslavement. I am not talking about his motives, but I am talking about the outcome.”

October is Black History Month in the UK, an event that has been celebrated nationwide for more than 30 years.
The month was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over many generations.
Now, Black History Month has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people but black people in general.
«In years gone by, October has been the only time of year when the UK talks about the achievements of black people in Britain,» says Catherine Ross guest editor of Black History Month 2020.

Black History Month was first launched in London in the 1980s, where the aim was for the local community to challenge racism and educate themselves and others about the British history that was not taught in schools.
Archaeologists, people who study human history by digging up sites looking at bones and ancient objects, think that the skeleton dated back to the stone age.
Throughout history black people have always been present in the UK but there has been a lack of representation in the history books.
In paintings of Henry VIII you can see black people in the background.
Queen Victoria even had a black goddaughter whose mother was a Nigerian Princess called Omoba. She was given to the Queen when her parents died after being captured by slave traders. Her name was changed to Sarah Forbes-Bonetta.
Many people think that it’s important to remember the forgotten people who have helped to shape the UK.
2020 saw protests in Britain, and around the world, in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after being stopped by police in America.
«2020 has held a mirror up to the world and forced many to see the reality of racism,» says Catherine Ross.
In the UK, Black Lives Matter protests have called for an end to systemic racism, where people aren’t treated fairly because they are black.
