[Archived] Background Difficulty Calculation Makes CTB Unplayable
Every time switching to ctb, it says «beatmap difficulty calculation is running in the background», and then proceeds to slow down my game to an unplayable rate, so it makes it near impossible to make it into a map. I have tried leaving my game open for hours on end, but the issue never seems to go away.

I believe certain broken maps can cause excessive lag and seems to cause difficulty calculation to get stuck(?). Not sure if the change visible on https://osu.ppy.sh/home/changelog/cuttingedge/20190524.1 is meant to fix that, but either way it hasn’t made its way to Stable.
If you’ve imported any maps recently, I’d try removing them. Or I suppose you could probably switch to CE and see if that fixes the issue.

I have the same issue right after updating my osu! client. I’ve let the client run in the song select for some time for the beatmap calculation to finish but right after restarting the client it starts to do the same calculation again. This has been an issue for me for several weeks and sometimes it eats up my overall CPU usage causing my PC to be unusable. I’m currently typing this with my osu! client closed because i can’t open other applications while my client is open due to the heavy cpu usage of beatmap calculation running in background during song select.
TLDR: Beatmap calculation keeps happening after a game restart even if it was already finished before.

This started appearing after I copied my songs and skins to a separate folder before I deleted osu on my harddrive and installed a new osu game on my ssd.
After I finished installing osu on my ssd, I copied all the songs and skins i saved previously and pasted them in the songs/skins folder.

I left the song select screen on mania on for more than 4 hours total, and it is still trying to calculate the star ratings of my maps despite there only being like 25 mapsets with the SR still listed at 0. The client is obviously still doing something, since I can hear my computer working hard like it normally does when trying to calculate the SR of a lot of maps, so I can’t imagine that it was good for my computer to leave this broken process going on for that long. Also, leaving the process on for longer than a few minutes starts to really hurt the client. Things start to freeze up and sometimes even crash.

It finally stopped saying that it was calculating difficulty. I guess the Halloween update made the game calculate all key modes at once, instead of waiting for the player to actually go to that key mode. Since I have all ranked maps, this means the client was calculating the difficulty for over 900,000 mania maps. This was obviously overloading the client, which was causing constant performance issues, glitches relating to files not loading correctly, and occasional full game crashes. One of the glitches is still going on too. There are 40-50 maps per key mode that are stuck at 0 stars, and the only way that I’ve found to get the game to calculate the SR again is be manually redownloading each map, which will likely take hours and can mean losing historical local scores. This change to how mania convert star rating is calculated in bulk needs to either be reverted or changed. It is obvious that the client was not designed to take that much calculation all at once since it caused endless problems for me for 3 days, and some of the problems persist still.

The recalculations only happen at song select (they stop during gameplay) and run at the lowest priority possibly.

If it does run at the lowest priority possible, then why did it sometimes cause the song select menu to be so laggy as to be pretty much unusable for most of the 5 hours I left it on? And, why did it cause tons of glitches with things not loading correctly like backgrounds, audio, and the SR of those specific maps? The last time the standard SR formula got updated, it took like 20-30 minutes, but there were no glitches caused by it and pretty much no lag. Is it possible that each key mode calculation is running at the same time, which made all those low priority functions add up to be something that is certainly not low priority? I don’t really know, I don’t know much about programming.
Edit: I am taking the few hours necessary to redownload all of the maps that this change glitched, and it sometimes causes major stuttering in the song select menu even with just one mapset. Something isn’t working correctly with the priority of difficulty calculation.
Edit 2: Actually nevermind, there are too many maps to reinstall and I will lose too many local scores that are important to me. Looks like I have to reinstall the whole game and go through hours of backups to fix this safely, if that even is safe.

There’s no need to redownload anything, but it may be helpful if you can narrow down the specific beatmap causing the issue. It’s probably a beatmap with infinite BPM or other user-edits that are unsupported by osu!

I have only ranked maps saved, so I don’t have too many crazy game breaking maps. The maps that were affected were pretty random. Most of them were maps with songs from u’s, and a couple from a band called «Usa». The fact that those two were so common makes me think that something froze when the calculator was on US alphabetically, but it still registered them as calculated, which meant that I have to redownload them. Pretty much every other one had no pattern that I could find. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/829646 and https://osu.ppy.sh/s/582089 were broken without any key mods. Some, but not all, of the difficulties of https://osu.ppy.sh/s/885158 were broken on 4k, I think. Some of the difficulties of both sets of Everything will freeze were broken on 14k, if I remember correctly. This is a tiny fraction of the ones that I would have to redownload.
I am reinstalling osu anyway since this is only one of the issues that the Halloween update caused for my client. My only hope is to reinstall. If some maps get broken again when I do the difficulty calculation on the new install and they are the same maps, we will know if it is qualities of those particular maps, or state of my song folder, that is causing them to get glitched.
Edit: I made a new install osu and copied over the songs folder with some other stuff, and, yea, the maps that had issue on the other install do not have an issue on this one. On top of that, the stuttering and lag in song select is still very much there, so it isn’t just my old install of the game. However, since this new install has some database issues where, even though the song folder has every map in the game, some maps just aren’t showing up and there is no way to know which ones aren’t there unless I redownload all maps individually, so I don’t intend to leave this install on for 2+ hours to see if the lag and stuttering get so bad as to crash like it did before, but I don’t doubt that it would.

Problem Details:
When I go to the difficulties tab, there is a group that is titled ‘Difficulty not calculated’.

That’s fine. Just leave osu! open for a while and it’ll calculate those maps in the background.
You can ‘speed it up’ by clicking trough the maps in that group manually.

It actually did for me. By incredible amounts.
The thing is, the maps were actually already calculated, but there was a recalculation for everyone for no apparant reason.
Opening a mapset (by clicking on it) basically instantly put that mapset’s maps in the appropriate difficulty group.
I left osu! open (both minimized and maximised) for hours, restarted a few times in between, etc,
and after
6 hours there was barely any progress. So I spam-clicked trough the mapsets
(which took me a long time, but still less than 45 minutes),
and with over half of my maps still being «not yet calculated», I got calculated ALOT quicker than it would otherwise have taken.
Perhaps this was because all maps were actually already calculated (as the star rating didn’t change before/after)?
I don’t know, either way, I’m just describing what happened.
